Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, September 8, 2023
Today’s Text: Numbers 14:26-30
Key Verse: Numbers 14:28 (NLT): “So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say.”
Why does our words matter to God? Why do they have the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21)? It is so because we carry the nature of God. We were formed in the image of God and created in His similitude. So, like Him, when we speak things, a level or token of creative power is released with/for dynamic abilities to impact not just our lives, but the lives of everyone or everything around us. Many Christians are habitual grumblers and murmurers, and not only do they so, but they also release poisonous and damaging words on themselves during such complaints and grumbling. And unfortunately, for such men, God hears every bitter complaint and perceives all unthankful and rebellious moods and moves.
We must be mindful that when we speak, we are speaking some laws of life. We are creating both spiritual as well as physical order of things. God created our voices to be in tune with our heart. If we speak uplifting things to ourselves and others; and always try to build one another up, then we will in turn be built up and encouraged. If we declare that it is well; it shall, indeed be well. And if, on the other hand, we only say negative things, and always tear ourselves and others down with negative words; we still reap the fruit of our lips.
Have you not heard that mouths testify against people?! And have you not heard that we overcome the devil by the words of our mouth?! Colossians 4:6 says, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.” I've always considered this verse in light of the fact that the same salt that makes bland food flavorful, and therefore a delight to eat can be so excessive that it can destroy both your taste bud and life.
Quote for the Day: “Negative words attract negative waves and forces; and positive words increase positivity and victory in our lives. Words matter to God.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please remind me to always season my speech with grace. Teach me to speak the truth in love, and constructive words that will build up, and edify both my hearers and myself — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
