Today’s Text: Proverbs 18:10–15
Key Verse: Proverbs 18:10 (ESV): “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”
Jasmine Goh shared an experience of her visit to a water park with some friends. They attempted to navigate a floating obstacle course made of inflatable platforms. Of course, expectedly, the bouncy, slippery platforms made walking straight almost impossible for them. They wobbled their way across ramps, cliffs, and bridges, yelping as they rose and fell repeatedly into the water. So that by the time they completed the first course, they were already completely exhausted, and had to lean on one of the “towers” to catch their breath.
However, because the tower was also inflated and flimsy, their weight tossed it over and almost immediately hurl them into the water. But to the glory of God we have a better, stronger and safe tower who is a stronghold for defense and protection, not just in slippery terrain but across life’s most turbulent journey. In Judges, men of Thebez fled to “a strong tower” to hide from Abimelek’s attack on their city. This is a foreshadow of our escape through the name of Jesus. The metaphor of a strong tower is used here to describe how God saves us when we trust Him.
Unfortunately, rather than lean on our sure strong tower when we are beaten down, we always seek other things for safety and support. Some people lean on their career, relationships, or physical comforts. Some look for strength in their wealth; and others seek after forces of darkness for strength and fortification; but just as the inflatable tower couldn’t support Jasmine and her friends, nothing outside Christ can give us the needed safe and secure solution. Only God, who is omnipotent and is in charge of all situations can provides true safe and sure security in all situations.
Quote for the Day: “Nowhere else on earth can man find a tower of strength stronger, taller, and unassailable like the name of Jesus." — Simon Olatunji
Prayer: Dear Lord and Father, thank You for being my sure and secure source. Thank You for always being with me. Thank You for reminding me to run to You always. Please help me, dear God, help me to run to You instead of turning to other things for comfort and security — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
