Today’s Text: 1 Kings 21:25-29
Key Verse: 1 Kings 21:25 (ESV): "There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited.”
Good morning, friends. America celebrates Presidents' Day today to honor all U.S. presidents. The holiday evolved to recognize Georg Washington's birthday, but is now earmarked to celebrate all leaders that serve well. This holiday should speak to us about one leader of Israel, whose name was Ahab. He was married to Jezebel and was known for wicked ways and idolatry. God condemned him through the prophet Elijah for his actions and was brought to a tragic ultimately end.
We are blessed, this morning, with the opportunity to meditatate on his life and beware of the dangers of turning away from God and embracing sin and idolatry. Let us also think about the consequences of allowing ourselves to be influenced by ungodly alliances that lead us astray, as Ahab was influenced by Jezebel. It is wisdom for us to be mindful of our own choices and actions, and seek to follow God's ways rather than succumbing to the preasure or temptations of the world. May we learn from Ahab's mistakes and turn towards righteousness and faithfulness.
Many today have been attracted to fame, fantasy and financial-freaking, and have become relentlessly obsessed in the pursuit of vanity despite its costs and consequences. God wants us to remember the dangers turning away, and be aware of our own obsessions and compulsions. Why would you let transient desires to consume you, driving you to sacrifice your well-being, peace of mind, relationships with God, and the hope of eternal glory? What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul (Luke 12:19-20)?
Quote for the Day: “Compromising faith and yielding to the influence of darkness lead to a downward path of destruction. But God's grace and mercy remain available to those who turn back to Him." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please help us so that Ahab's life would serve as a warning for us to cultivate self-awareness in our lives. May we recognize when our passions become all-consuming and learn to let go of destructive desires. May we walk before You in wisdom and sober spirit — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.Your Darling Bishop (DaBishop)
