Learning from Jabez (Part Four)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Tuesday, July 16, 2019

Our Text: 1 Chronicles 4:1-10

Key Verse: 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV): “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

Ours is the true and living God, who specializes in turning things meant as our doom and gloom into our glorious bloom and bliss. Are you marked in anyway for anything but pleasant? Do people really write you off, thinking there’s no way out and no means. Jabez wasn’t marked by friends or foe, he was sentenced to a life of no-do-good by his own parent. But the very first thing Scripture tells us about Jabez is that he cried to the God of Israel. By so doing, he states God’s lordship and headship over his life. Prayer is a way of acknowledging our helplessness, and God’s sovereignty!

The verb rendered “called” is Hebrew word signifying a loud call, or an outburst of cry for help with the same manner in which a man pleads in a court. A sole survivor of a shipwreck managed to drift to a deserted island on a raft. Time after time he tried in vain to attract the attention of a passing ship. Even a ship that approached more closely did not get the attention of his signal fire. The ship passed by and quickly faded from his sight. Do you even find yourself at such desperation that you you feel written off and left alone. A cry to God for help can change the situation. The man broke down in tears and cried aloud to God, obviously in Jabez’s way. While he prayed, the flames from his signal fire accidentally set his thatched shelter roof on fire, reducing his only provisions to a heap of ashes. But that was God’s answer to his prayer. The captain of the ship noticed the flames turned around.

Quote for the Day: “When we cry to God the very fireworks of family, friends or foes that seemed to seal our doom turns into means of our deliverance.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to submit my will to You and pour out my heart to You like Jabez. Help me to experience how you turn people’s frustrations into fascination. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
