Today’s Text: Luke 17:11-19
Key Verse: Luke 17:14 (NKJV): “So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.”
If you were like me, today’s gospel account probably puzzles you. It would daze any man why Jesus would heal the lepers, and tell them to keep such undeniable miracle from people. But instead instruct them to go present themselves before the priest who would then offer the sacrifice prescribed by Moses. Do you not worry why Jesus did not worry about losing the credit to the priest? If you do, the question should be: What is there in this scripture for us to learn? What possibly are the gains or interests of the Kingdom in the overall story?
Jesus wanted to teach us that every miracle is a blessing from God and are to give glory and credit to Him, and not to man. God never shares His glory with man. We indirectly deny people of miracles when we seek them (the people) to talk about us and refer to us rather than God. When we receive any blessing from God, we must represent ourselves to Him in gratitude. Blessings last and more blessings flow when we accord all the glory to God and return thanks to Him.
Another lesson is order. Jesus demonstrated submission to authorities and order. I wonder where today’s generation of believers get the spirit of arrogance from. Our Lord was a complete gentleman so much that “bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out.” Lepers being religiously and ceremonially unclean are unfit to associate with the society. Though healed, Jewish law prescribes that they visit a priest to perform religious inspection and certify that they were truly cleansed, offer a temple sacrifice, declare them clean and readmit them to society. Jesus followed this law and promoted order.
The story also teaches how blessings flow toward us when we seek to undertake rather than understand the commands of the Lord. Notice that the lepers were not clean until them have undertaken the words of Christ. Jesus Christ is still the same today as of yesterday, and same shall He be forever. We fail to experience His miraculous power in our days, as of old, because we fail to walk in obedience and submission.
Quote for the Day: “Believers’ duty and business is constant: to observe the precepts of Christ by doing what He says, going where He sends, and following where He leads." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I ask that You give me the strength to follow You each day in my walk with You. Give me a tender heart. Set my steps in and on Your foot print. I ask in your most blessed name, Jesus. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
