Let there be Light

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, November 1, 2024

Today’s Text: Genesis 1:1-19

Key Verse: Genesis 1:3 (ESV): "And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light."

God's first creative order created light in the midst of a formless void, marking light as the very first, principle and pivotal element of the universe. Symbolically, light represents knowledge, goodness, and God himself. This explains why it is a powerful and significant first act of creation. I have a fun memory of when I started as young dad, Triumphant was always attracted to light bulbs. He would smile and point his tiny finger to any source of light in the house.

In the beginning of times. God primary resolution of the dark, formless, and empty world was the command that brought light into His creation. Also His first recorded testimony and reflection was that the light was good. This testimony has run throughout the rest of Scripture till this very day. Light is always good. In Psalm 119:130, the psalmist testifies that God’s words gives light or illuminate our understanding. This is a foreshadow of Christ, who, in John 8:12, refers to Himself as “the light of the world,” i.e., the giver of the light of life.

Our world is buffetted by darkness in different categories and shades. Halloween, a celebration of darkness just ended; Spain and other regions of the world lay in very thick darkness of natural disaster; American faces a most darkened singular election ever; and of course, we have come to another month full of its own uncertainties. And just like God’s first utterance in the work of creation gives light, His word is giving us light in all these struggles. He shall give us light to see Him and to identify His fingerprints around us, to discern what is good from what is evil, and to follow Jesus one step at a time in this darkened world. As I welcome you to November, I pray that in whatever area of your life in which you need God’s light, His light will shine for you in the name of Jesus.

Action Steps: Don't allow darkness to settle in any way. Speak light into darkness. Declare God's goodness over that curly situation. Shine your light as a child of God.

Quote for the Day: "As children of God, our words must be the spark that ignites the light of hope amid our world's thickest darkness." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, as You spoke light into existence, illuminate my path this month. Let Your radiance shine in and through me, bringing hope in every darkness. Cause a spiritual awakening that will enlighten my heart to Your purpose. Lead me in Your truth. And, please cause Your radiant light to reveal Your glory in my life — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
