Like Gold in the Galeras

Today’s Scripture Threshings for Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Key Verse: But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” (vs. 10, ESV)

I appreciate the many happy birthday prayers or presents, but just as, or before, you send them, let me share how I love to celebrate today’s landmark and milestone with you: I am full of retrospect on how God takes an empty life and fill it with many good things. I see how God scripts my story to lift someone somewhere up, today, who is feeling the weight of some crushing burden or heartache. My life, just as Job's, speaks immeasurable comfort, to anyone in the midst of any trial.

Probably you don’t realize this is true about you too. We don’t often see God’s dealings, details and designs; so it’s so easy for us to prefer others’ lives or journey and destinies. However, before you draw the line, let me set an historical picture before you. You probably have heard, or need to hear of the terrific Galeras volcano in Columbia. It has continued its eruptions for decades and leaves unbelievable devastation in the ecology of the area with occasional dusting of ash on nearby cities. This is usually a sorry site and sight. But it was in that rubble that Dr. Fraser Goff, a geologist made an interesting discovery in 1993. Goff sampled some of the eruption and found they were full of gold — a first time visible raw gold were found in an active volcano — which would have remained buried under earth’s core interior bedrocks; but for the ultra high heat and pressure from the core of the volcano that pushed them to the surface.

Do you wonder why your life’s been so troubled and under heats? Do you think if we were there to observe Job’s life, we’d be able to see beyond his horror, hurt, and humiliation? Whereas we would see devastation, Job himself fixed his eyes upon the design. Like us, his friends saw horror, unlike us, Job sees honor. He counted it great honor to be tried by the Lord, and maintained abiding faith that he “shall come forth as gold." His problem was huge, but trusted God’s power. His pain was deep, but his faith was great. He had intense pressures, but he kept purpose in view.

Regardless of all the twists and turns, or our inability to understand or explain the detours of our lives, God wants us to trust Him even if it means life only makes sense in reverse. I’ve found it true in my own experience that until “we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose,” (Romans 8:28), we’d dwell in the golf but not be unable to see the gold.

Job saw his trials not from a cruel or malicious treatment, but as a divinely intended refining. He said: “On the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him; he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him. But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” You too can rest in this blessed assurance: that God is ruling over every detail of your difficulty. He is causing the fire, keeping the flames, and cautioning the fuel. He is also conditioning the temperature to ensure that you come forth as gold.

Quote for the Day: “A good friend is not only the man who approves what you mean to do, but one who reproves or disapproves what you do amiss.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear LORD, help me to become sensitive to my world and to cherish those blessed relationships which you have surrounded me with. Give me a sense of spiritual awareness and alertness that differentiates good from evil, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayer,
