Today’s Scripture Threshing for Saturday, May 25, 2019
Today’s Text: 1 Kings 18:20-29
Key Verse: 1 Kings 18:21 (ESV): ”And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.”
Imagine what would happen if your claims for God were put to a public test! What would people find out? Would it be found that you’re given to such an empty religiosity which does not go a skin deep talk less of touching the heart; or a deep seated dedication to the true and living God? On the noon that God moved Elijah to put the worship of men of Israel to a public test, they were found limping between two opinions—a true reflection of their mental and spiritual condition.
Until the prophet’s piercing question breaks the hypocrisy in their heart, the people's apathy against God’s prophet, their false religiosity, spiritual blindness, fanciful but vain worship and their odious state of lostness could not give way to the reality of their double mindedness. They had thought it was fashionable to maintain serving God while they followed Ahab to worship Baal; but it was time to choose between God and Baal.
Have you been splitting your spiritual and religious energies between the world's system and the work of Jesus Christ. Jesus warns us against such limp in Luke 11:23: “He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth." Genuine faith in Christ makes no room for double standard or allegiances. "Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God" (James 4:4).
Quote for the Day: “A perfect portrayal of hypocritical Christianity is on Carmel’s Mount when men of Israel figuratively limped on two knees, one for God and the other for Baal.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to give up rebellion and hypocrisy of heart. Help me to be willing to do anything you want me to do. No matter what is popular to my generation, let it be that you have found a willing person in me, who is willing to be different for you, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
