Lines in Pleasant Places

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, January 16, 2024

Today’s Text: Psalm 16:1-11

Key Verse: Psalm 16:6 (ESV): “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.”

In most simplified form, this text simply means: “The lines of my boundary have fallen in pleasant places; surely my inheritance is delightful.” David adopted the figure of the partitioned promised land to explain his inheritance in God. Whereas some of us grumble and decry our portion in life; David was filled with gratitude for the portion of Canaan that was apportioned his tribe by lot. He belonged to the tribe of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob and Leah.

While every tribe (except Levi) inherited the land where their lot fell, of course, his was particularly favored, being the largest tribe in terms of population. They received the largest but certainly not the best tract of land, encompassing most of southern Canaan, with borders from the northern end of the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean coast.

In our case, we don’t always see beyond our ordeals. We are too clouded to see how lines of our spiritual inheritance have fallen in pleasant places. We often forget that though we have no control over where our lives lot fell, and do not influence our decent, race and gender. we are most blessed to be so wonderfully and fearfully made. That, itself, is a pleasant line. When shall we begin to simply notice how things are in our favor? David described his land of inheritance so well that those with more rich portion would feel jealous.

However, he was not actually literally referring to a piece of land; for his speech was a spiritual metaphor; how do you perceive God’s goodness to you? To David, “The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: Thou maintainest my lot” (verse 5, KJV). It’s a new year, folks! How shall we perceive our inheritance in Christ? What better line could we ever ask for in heaven and on earth? Our inheritance is Christ Himself: our partaking with Him in His glory, and in the divine nature.

Quote for the Day: “No better lines have fallen unto us than being in Christ. Our boundaries are not demarcated by spheres and limits. Our pleasant places are not just the best of the best of earth; but the right hand of the father. Hallelujah!” — Simon Olatunji

Prayer: Dear Lord and Father, I thank You because You are my portion. I have a good inheritance in You! Please, Lord, let this joy fill my mind. Teach me to be conscious of this inheritance: that my place is not something but Someone; that I have been called in Christ by grace to partake in the divine nature and glory! Thank the Lord for this glorious inheritance — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
