Today’s Text: Proverbs 28:25-28
Key Verse: Proverbs 28:27 (ESV): “Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.”
The tradition of Boxing Day celebration every December 26 started out among the British, who, unfortunately have relegated what actually began as St. Stephen’s Day when gifts were given to the poor to shopping and finding the best deals, similar to American Black Fridays. The Boxing Day derived Its name from the Alms Box at the back of churches back then. The boxes were often emptied and their contents distributed to the poor on St. Stephen’s Day while church members sang, “Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.”
And it is upon today’s verse that the earliest idea of Alms Box that later metamorphosed into Boxing Day was founded. When you are generous, the Bible promises that you will find yourself lacking nothing. And, in the converse truth, those who are stingy and do not share their wealth with the poor find themselves eventually in need. Today is an opportune moment to think about those who are less fortunate. Don’t hoard or pile up things. Earliest celebration of the Boxing Day started when they saw that after opening the huge pile of presents, there was often the problem of where to put them all!
Their cupboards, closets, and garages are already full. So they boxed them up for those who need them most. And they learnt that there is so much joy in giving! And what today’s Christians need to learn and experience is the joy that God always provides for His own. And, the more we give to others, the more we experience His blessing! The Lord always has a way of continually surprising us! This reason this is so is because God wants us to be His living boxes of blessing to others.
Quote for the Day: “Show me a generous hand; and I will show you one that gathers more than it sows; and shall never suffer to be in want of any good thing.”
Prayer: Dear Lord and Father, thank You for this beautiful day, so full of Your love, blessings, and peace! I thank You, Lord, for being my greatest giver and the greatest gift. Please help me to be a blessing to others even as I grow as a reflection of your blessing — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas with all my love and prayers,
