Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, August 16, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Peter 1:3-5

Key Verse: 1 Peter 1:3 (ESV): “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

We live in a world that is really dark and forlon. Violence, hopelessness and injustice is all we see in the news. But there is a light in this darkness. By His death, Jesus Christ has substituted a living hope for everyone who trusts Him. The widow of the former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev deeply stunned the world by publicly demonstrating an incredible audacious hope in Christ at the funeral of her husband. She stood motionless by the coffin until seconds before it was closed. Just as the soldiers touched the lid, before the view of all, in that citadel of secular, atheistic power, she performed an act of great courage and hope: She reached down and made the sign of the cross on her husband's chest. She believed her husband was wrong. She believed that there was another and better life in and through Christ.

She altered no word, but her action spoke so loud that life was best represented by Jesus who died on the cross. She showed the world that just as Joseph Stalin died and now Leonid Brezhnev followed, so will all Soviet and world powers die, and worldly hope perish; but Jesus Christ and the hope He gives remain alive forever. Anyone who hopes in Jesus Christ, according to Peter, has this living hope. Therein is the beauty of this text: that before our new life in Christ, there was no good thing to hope for — by the Fall, we are all subject to a surmise darkness — indeed, nothing but eternal damnation awaited us. But through His cross, Jesus Christ has begotten us to a brand new hope. So, to us Christians, hope is deeper than a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. It is a living assurance and a life. According to Apostle Peter, only a man in union with Christ receives this life — this living hope.

Quote for the Day: “No mystery is deeper and clearer than the glorious escape pof a life anchored in Jesus Christ.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, You are the Lover of my soul. When you come into my life, all that is within me burst forth in living hope. You are my glory and the lifter of my head. Please continue to make my feet steady in the hope You give, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
