Today’s Text: Genesis 13:1-18
Key Verse: Genesis 13:14, NIV: ”And the LORD said to Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward.”
There are so many things in life that can hurl down our vision and head—things which, when they happen or refuse to happen, are capable of blurring our sight of other goodness and blessings that have happened, are happening, or can happen to us. For Abram (as he was still called during the time of this visitation), the departure of Lot was certainly a great grief. That was a loss of not just a relative; but that of a companion that has shared his vision: someone that obeyed God and abandoned his country alongside him. And don’t forget that he was probably a good alternative to him regarding his heirship, being childless.
Early enough in this new month and year, God is sending us an encouragement to help us look up in anticipation of the promised exploits in spite of issues around us that put us down. Remember that Lot just left him; and God had to visit him to encourage him to let leave or let go whoever may as long as He (God) is still with us. What to do when we feel alone is not to evince an humbled and self-renouncing spirit. We are to lift up our eyes. It is only in doing so that we see whence our true help comes from (Psalms 121:1).
Sometimes, except we let all the Lots leave us alone; except we go through those shadows; except the waterloos loom, we may not truly have a needed suitable occasion for the Lord to draw near and speak His precious promise or re-assuring words to us. We may be far from the promised exploits. Abram was standing at a place between Beth-el and Hai— a point from where he could get an extensive survey of the promised land. Unfortunately, the departure of Lot made the patriarch so forlorn that he lost sight of the mighty exploit that was before him. There is a mighty spiritual reality before you that may remain hidden or blurred except you lift “up now thine eyes” as the Lord said.
Action Steps: Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right. Start the first five minutes of your day with God. Like Abraham, live sacrificially and to live generously. Trust and obey God.
Quote for the Day: ”Sense of abandonment and it’s accompanying loneliness are often the best ways we could truly experience deeper comfort of God’s loving presence, of which our noisy word or lousy company deprive us.” (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I need the inner strength to lift up my head and say like David: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. LORD command Your lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night, let Your song be with me — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
