Love is from God

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, June 21, 2024

Today’s Text: 1 John 4:7-12

Key Verse: 1 John 4:7 (ESV): "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God."

The epistle of 1 John is a pastoral letter written to early Christian communities, by John, the Beloved, to emphasize the significance of love as a mark of true discipleship. Being part of a larger section (1 John 4:7-12), today's main verse explores the nature of Christian love and its connection to God; and how believers are to love one another with the understanding that love is not humanly motivated but something that originates from God. It is not just a feeling but a choice rooted in our connection with God's nature. Therefore, we are called to love one another, not because of our human capacity, but because of God's presence within us. This is a sign of being born of God and having a deep understanding of God's character.

This verse provides a rich foundation for reflection on how the power of love should shape our relationships and community; especially in a world in which one of our most pressing psychological issues is loneliness. People are craving connection and community, and a significant aspect of this is having someone who will genuinely listen to them and show them the power of love.

Mother Teresa had said that the greatest need in the world today is not more science, not more social engineering, not more teaching, not more knowledge, not more power, not even more preaching—the greatest need we have today is for love. We are not talking about the ordinary, natural love we find in the world but a supernatural love that flows from genuime relationship with God and His people. Love that teaches us to know that that friend who has experienced loss or who is in a difficult situation may not need our advice or solutions as much as he needs us to listen attentively and empathetically. Love that demonstrates the kindness and generosity of God to others. O, where can we find the love of God in this hate ridden age.

Quote for the Day: "Why buy flowers and cards when you posses a most precious gift to offer others; when you can give love and embraces those around you in ways that bloom better than flowers." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please help me to be a good listener and to show love to those around me. Fill me with your supernatural love, that I may be a vessel for your love to flow through. May I be a source of comfort, support, and connection for those in need — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
