Today’s Text: Romans 12:9-21
Key Verse: Romans 12:9 (ESV): "Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good."
From previous verses, Apostle Paul has been laying down general moral precepts and principles becoming of Christians. He started with self-sacrifice as the very foundation of all goodness. He had explained how it comes through the transforming power of the knowledge of the Lord. He, therefore, proceeds here to a more specific exhortations to emphasize the importance of genuine love, rejecting evil, and embracing goodness, The Apostle urges us that love should be authentic and heartfelt, not just an outward show. He encourages believers to cultivate a deep-seated hatred for evil and a strong attachment to what is good. The original word he used for "sincere" is anypokritos, a word that means "without hypocrisy" or "genuine." This is our call to authenticity in our relationships and interactions.
We can't be genuine toward others while harboring hatred towards them. But we don't have to hate people while rejecting and denouncing their evil actions, thoughts, and behaviors that contradict God's will. We are simply to cling, hold fast or adhere to what Is good. As believers in Christ, we should actively pursue what is good, virtuous and honorable. Can we all evaluate our motivations and ensure that our love and actions are genuine, rather than self-serving? Can our love arise from genuine character that deeply love people while having intense hatred for evil, and holding strong adhesion to good? These are difficult questions, and, perhaps, the only way to give a good answer, or the very best answer itself, is simply be a Christian.
Action Steps: Be a true and worthy ambassador of Jesus Christ. Love like He would love. Recognize and reject evil in all forms. Cultivate kindness and compassion. Embrace and promote what is good.
Quote for the Day: "Love is authentic. Indeed, it can be synonymous with authenticity. In its nature, it rejects darkness and embraces light." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your word to me and my generation this day. Please fill me with sincere love that genuinely love people whike still having courage to oppose evil. Please help me cling to what is good — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
