Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, March 2, 2020
Today’s Text: Matthew 9:14-17
Key Verses: Matthew 9:17 (ESV): ”Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
The month of March is still pretty new, and this parable of our Lord, will help us both to shape a brand new start for the month and for a new walk with the Master. The text illustrates the incompatibility of the old with the new. No man pours new wine into the bottle of the old. The old represents the spoilt, stale and spent; and the new the fine, filtered and fresh. The old cannot be patched by pouring the new in it. If you do you increase the volume of old wine and lose your newness; or you’d lose everything. Yes, because if your new wine is powerful enough, it will cause the worn out old wineskins to burst.
Through this parable, our Lord wants us to give up old manmade traditions that hinders the new wine of the Gospel and the new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. You cannot be a part of God’s new wave of blessings if you reject those needed changes in your life. The Pharisees were like this: they fail to embrace changes necessary to accommodating the coming new and refreshing move of God in their day. It’s a call to wake up from the delusion that Evangelist Luke described in 5:39: “No man having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.” Until you give up this delusion, you can’t make yourself anew and enjoy the blessing.
Quote for the Day: "Old wines represent those ungodly traditions in our lives that stand on the way of God’s new move.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Father, please give us grace to be sensitive to your moves in our time, and to key ourselves into your plan, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
