Martha Martha

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, October 13, 2024

Today’s Text: Luke 10:38-42

Key Verse: Luke 10:41 (ESV): “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things."

Our Savior and Lord is gentle and meek. He introduced Himself in Matthew 11:28-30, inviting us to "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." What better proof of tenderness and gentleness can humanity ever find outside of Jesus Christ?! What tenderness of reproof can anyone find or give than that which Jesus already demonstrated in the text before us today.

Why did Jesus call Martha's name twice? In scripture, a person is only called twice when they are invited to a new life, or a new way of looking at their role vis-a-vis their relationship with God: the two-fold utterance of names runs through the Bible, beginning from Moses, Moses, at the burning bush; to Simon, Simon in Luke 22:31, and Saul, Saul in Acts 9:4. God says our names twice when He wants to draw our attention, and affection towards an assignments, tasks, favor, warning or a call to a higher life.

Like you and I, Martha was careful, anxious, troubled, disturbed, distracted, or very solicitous about things that are not where the heart of the Master is, and Jesus calls her tenderly to draw her attention away from the many objects which excite her attention to that which is needful. In like manner, the Lord is tenderly calling us out of our anxious lifestyle, and inviting us to rather pay attention to heavenly wisdom. He wants us to learn that the one thing needful is for us to give up ourselves to His guidance. Things of this life will be taken away from us, or we shall be taken away from them; but nothing (not men, nor devils) shall separate us from the love of Christ. That's the one thing needful that cannot be taken away from us.

Action Steps: Assess your life and identify areas requiring adjustment. Let go of distractions. Concentrate on your relationship with God. Quiet your heart and mind to hear God's gentle whispers. Respond promptly to God's guidance.

Quote for the Day: "Nothing falls apart when the Lord's presence is in place. It mught look formless and void; but God's Spirit is over it. (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for your love for me. Please help me discern what's truly essential in my life. Quiet my heart and mind, that I may hear Your gentle voice. Grant me the wisdom to seek You first, and place my relationship with You above all else. Let my life reflect Your love, peace and joy — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
