Today’s Text: Habakkuk 3:1-16
Key Verses: Habakkuk 3:2 (ESV): “O Lord, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O Lord, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.”
Each time I read this prophetic lamentation’s verse 2, it gives me a tone of Psalm 44 verse 1’s “We have heard with our ears O God! our fathers have told us. And there is no doubt that this prophet was out for an encounter of God deeper than the skin. A revival was about to hit his spirit. Why do I know? One of the first and fundamental features in revival is the sense that God has drawn awesomely near in his holiness, mercy, and might. Do you remember this feeling following a similar experience with Isaiah (chapter 64) when he prayed that God would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at His presence?
And yes, indeed, God comes down, visits, draws near to His people, and makes His majesty known when they are aware of Him. This awareness is not some esoteric knowledge drawn from imported spirituality, but an experiential awareness of God—when a person sees God on High throne, and cannot help but fall on his knees crying, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips" (Isaiah 6:1-5). It is an awareness that pass us from hypocrisy to reality. Yes, it is a genuine awareness of God that births such soul searching, scorching humility—and that is where revival begins. I see a host of Habakkuks in my mind’s eyes passing from religiosity to spirituality; passing from “O Lord, I hear the report of You” into a personal experience of revival; and who by continuing in that thirst, are sustaining that revival fire.
Quote for the Day: “A true revival fire is kindled when people hear the voice of God, and not other people’s report of Him.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, we crave Your revival in our lives and land and we cry out to You today. That You will revive us again and breathe into us life and purpose to seek and find You. We acknowledge that we have fallen short of Your glory, so we ask that You will cleanse us and create a right spirit in us again — in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
