Today’s Text: John 14:25-31
Key Verse: John 14:27 (KJV): "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
In a world filled with fleeting pleasures: where we are in our highest points at one moment and in the lowest in the next, Jesus offers us a peace that transcends the ordinary. This peace is not based on circumstances, but on His presence in our lives. Unfortunately, while navigating life's ups and downs, we search for joy and peace in external sources such as material possessions, relationships, or our achievements. That is why we are often left disappointed and empty. But the peace and joy that Jesus gives are real, unshakeable, and eternal.
Unlike the world's joy and peace, which are outward and based on self-centered desires, Jesus' peace is inward and empowers us to love, serve, and bless others, even in difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, we continue to pursue peace in every avenue imaginable. Only a few have successfully found this peace; majority have not and cannot because they continue to seek peace and happiness where they cannot be found.
While seeking happiness and peace, the world system fight trust in God but unfortunately for them, these could not be found in unbelief otherwise Voltaire, an infidel of the most pronounced type would not have wished he had never been born. If found in pleasure, Lord Byron who lived a life of pleasure could not have written: "The worm, the canker, and grief are mine alone." If it were in money, Jay Gould, the American millionaire, who had plenty of it, would not have said in his dying moments that he suppose he was the most miserable man on earth. Even peace does not come from military might and glory, otherwise Alexander the Great, having conquered the known world in his day would not have wept in his tent because there are no more worlds to conquer.
Where then is real joy and peace found? Today’s text provides us a simple answer: in Christ alone! Jesus told his disciples, "my peace I give unto you." This peace is not the absence of conflict, but one that comes from a relationship with God. He said I leave it with you because He is giving it as a legacy: something that will remain with them after He is gone. It is not something they can earn or achieve on their own; but it is what He, Jesus, alone gives. And of course, it is different from the fleeting, superficial peace offered by the world. Jesus is the source of peace. The Prince of Peace: the one who gives peace, ans without Him, peace cannot be found. So, would you receive Jesus' peace so that your hearts can be free from trouble, fear, anxiety, and/or uncertainty?
Action Step: Recognize that you can't control everything. Surrender your worries, fears, and anxieties to Jesus. Let go of your bid to control and fix things. Trust Jesus for all needed peace and joy.
Quote for the Day: "Only the Prince of peace can give you the peace you desire." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you seeking peace in my life and in the world around me. Please calm my mind and quiet my spirit. Give me peace in the midst of chaos, and stillness in the midst of noise. Give me serenity in the midst of turmoil. And, let your peace guard my heart, mind, relationships, community, and world — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
