Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, February 19, 2020
Our Text: Matthew 5:3-9
Key Verses: Matthew 5:3 (ESV): “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
A farmer once announced to his banker that he had a bad news and a good news. “The bad news is I can’t make my farm mortgage or pay off the loan. I still have debts on tractors and equipments. So I’m turning the farm over to you.” After a brief silence, the banker asked what the good news was. And the farmer said: “the good news is, I’m going to keep on banking with you.” O what an attitude to learn from! It sounds like the attitude becoming of a follower of Christ—regardless.
Friends, do you maintain banking with Jesus when your bans are full, and do you do so when the bans are gone? Poverty in spirit is such a spiritually blessed state, not because we are in a meritorious or perfect condition, but because, in spite of and in the midst of any deplorable condition, we stick to our lifestyle, rule, and marks of God’s kingdom. We are not ruled by what life gives us. But we maintain who we are, or are called to be. We continue to maintain our happiness and exhibit attitudes becoming of a follower of Christ regardless of any outward condition—be it prosperity or adversity.
Quote for the Day: "Spiritual poverty is marked by a disposition that maintains the sense of fullness we feel despite our emptiness in the hour in which the grace of Christ flows to us.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, bless me each day with peculiar Christian grace that maintains my joy regardless of what I have or what I do not, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
