Power of Godly Friendship

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, October 8, 2024

Today’s Text: John 15:1-15

Key Verse: John 15:12 (ESV): "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."

Friendship is one of the most important things in our lives. Particularly when we’re in need – that’s when we really know the importance of a friend, and who our friends are. But interestingly, you don’t hear many people talk about what God has to say about friendship through His Word. But God really has a lot to say about this. From Genesis through Revelation, we see how friendship matters to God. From friendship with Adam and Even in the cool hour of the day, to his friendship with Abraham and with the twelve Disciples through which Jesus establiahed his earthly ministry and kicked off the church. Friendship cannot no more matter to Him today.

It does matter so much that He commands us about it and dwells so much on it, saying: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. The reason is because friendship is a vital part of our lives in union with God. In the same manner as Jesus, our Lord built His ministry on friendship with His twelve disciples, we need all our friends to advance our cause.

Unfortunately, today's idea of friendship is a radical departure from Scriptures. Whereas Jesus calls His disciples friends, we'd rather surround ourselves with servants: disciples that we share the Father's business with but cannot eat on the sane table with. But Jesus wants us to learn of His meek, light snd easy yokes. His intimacy and trust for His disciple formed the powerful bedrock that championed the undying godpel movement after His ascension to heaven. This powerful idea of friendship is His model for our own friendships today and at all times. So, ask yourself: how does Jesus' idea of friendship touch you? How can you apply His command to "love each other" in your friendships? Reflect on the powerful outcome of a time when you and a friend worked together in selfless love.

Action Steps: Build those qualities in yourself that you are looking for in a friend. Cherish and nurture every relationship in your life. By all means, be a better friend to others.

Quote for the Day: "One faint touch of a sincere friend is brighter than the foglight of a thousand foe." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of friendships. I thank You for calling me Your friend even while I was yet Your enemy. O please, Lord, help me to cultivate relationships that reflect Your love and selflessness. May my friendships bring joy, support, and encouragement to others, just as Yours did — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
