Today’s Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22
Key Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV): "Pray without ceasing.”
One of the best opportunities available to us who would sustain a happy life altogether is praying; and one of the best opportunities to sustain a prayerful life is cultivating a happy life. This explains why the apostle Paul admonishes that we got to rejoice always to pray continually. And, og course, how can we truly rejoice except we are thanksful in all circumstances, regardless of ti es and seasons. The Bible says, beloved, "this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
Why was this important to Paul and his original readers? They lived in ancient Thessalonika around 50 AD, and were concerned about the second coming of Christ while they faced persecution and loads of uncertainties. This is why Paul the apostle had to dedicate a large section of this epistle to offer practical advice for living a godly life: one of which is our call to prayerful and happy life at all times, even in difficult circumstances. Understanding this background is necessary to encourage every believer living in similar situations; especially so that we may apply this passage to our lives.
We are in a generation in which we face persecution and rude uncertainties. Grumbling, nagging and complaints so easily creep in and take the best of us. We don't like to be that way; but, unfortunately, situations just so easily beset us. However, today's passage emphasizes the importance of finding a mindset of joy and gratitude at all times. And to have this uncommon experience, we must develop an attitude of a constant and ongoing conversation with God. This promise is so sure: if we build a lifestyle that pray without ceasing, we'd also enjoy a healthy heart of thanksgiving and trust that appreciate God in all circumstances.
That is why prayer should be a continuous and ongoing part of our lives, not just an occasional activity. It also reminds us that prayer is not just about asking for things, but also about rejoicing, thanking, and trusting in God's sovereignty. The more we trust God in prayer, the more happy life we find, and the more reason to give thanks; and then the more we likely we enjoy living the life given to persistent praying at all times. In Colossians 4:2, devotion to prayer is associated with watchfulness, and of course, a watchful believer will likely get out of trouble.
Quote for the Day: "We must hold on prayer the same way we do a steering wheel while traversing life terrain. It is our constant steering, not a spare tire in our emergencies." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please fill my heart with the spirit of prayer. May I experience the joy and peace that comes from trusting in you, and may my faith be strengthened. Help me to feel your presence, your love, and the happiness and hope that you alone give — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
