Today’s Text: Timothy 2:14-19
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV): "Do your best to present yourself to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth."
I am always excited to employ today's verse whenever there's the need to emphasize the importance of diligent study and preparation, accurate understanding and handling of Scripture, and living a life that is pleasing to God. But today, God has got something even deeper for us. His goal, I believe, is to help us become His faithful servants, who can stand confidently before Him, knowing that we have done our best to understand and apply His Word.
The entire 2 Timothy is a letter written by Paul to Timothy, a young pastor and his spiritual son as a call to faithfulness, perseverance, and orthodoxy in the face of false teaching and persecution. To achieve this, he must focus on sound doctrine and be responsible in handling of Scripture. As long as he does these things, he is presenting himslef to God. The word present is a compoud words between "pre" meaning in advance and the past tense of the verb "send." We all love to be used of God in great and wonderful ways. But it's all about how we pre-sent ourselves.
It has to do with how we exert ourselves. That's why Paul admonishes Timothy to sturdy to do it. This means that we all have to exert, be diligent, or be zealous to shew ourselves approved of God. To present your student for promotion and graduation in any course of study; you have to test, examine, or prove them. That's the same way we present ourselves unto God; not as student of science but as a workman, a laborer or a craftsman that needs not be ashamed.
When it comes to you and I, we're encouraged to be diligent in presenting ourselves to God so that we may be approved by Him and confident in our lives and ministries, without shame or reproach. To achieve this, we must recognize the importance of Bible study, accountability to God, diligence and zeal for spiritual things, accuracy and uphold sound teachings, and ministry preparation. Take time to reflect on your current approach to studyingGod's word. Consider your accountability to God in your handling of Scripture. Ask God to help you accurately understand and apply His Word. And, reflect on how prepared you are to handle the Word of truth.
Quote for the Day: "Accuracy is the honor of a workman; shame is the result of sloppiness. Handle the Word of Truth with precision, and present yourself to God with confidence, knowing you've done your best." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me to be a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of Truth. Give me a hunger to study and understand Your Word. Guide me in Your truth, and help me to apply it to my life. Help me to be a faithful steward of the truths You have entrusted to me — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
