Today’s Text: Ezekiel 13:1-12
Key Verse: Ezekiel 13:8 (ESV): “Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord God.”
In my culture, it used to be a total “outcast thing” to be false and not trustworthy. Elders teach younger generations wisdoms on why no one should deceive a friend of lie to the gods—though in reality—they might mean to the unknown God. Today's text reveals how much God hates lying prophets. It suggests repercussions by the figure of a besieged city, in the walls of which breaches have been made, through which the enemy rushes in to fight with its inhabitants and to take possession of its treasures. There is perhaps a reference to the approaching siege of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, in which that city would fall. Why? The sins of its inhabitants and the falsity of their prophets have created a wide gap in their spiritual defense, and deprive them of God’s jealousy for them.
Sins always expose us to the assaults of our enemies. Like the people of Sodom, sin brought the fiery flood that consumed them. The Israelites that perished in the wilderness did so because of the plague of their sins. In today’s text, we are promised that surely God visits His people. He said, "I will come unto you and chastise and punish you…” He promised to be an adversary to all false prophets. And is it not a sad and horrible thing to have God to be against one? Is there any contending with Him? Can, or should anyone ever be hardened against Him? A day is coming, and it shall be the day of the Lord, a time fixed by him when reckoning shall be given to him of all lives and ministries.
Quote for the Day: “If we persist in creating the gaps by our falsehoods, it is certain that resulting punishment shall creep in by God’s correction.“
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for Your word for me today. I recognize how much you have done for me, as a free gift of grace, and ask that You continue to examine me, and to cleanse me from any pretense, error and falsehood — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
