Pride Goes Before Destruction

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Saturday, March 23, 2019

Today’s Text: Proverbs 16:15-20

Key Verse: Proverbs 16:18 (ESV): ”Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

We live in an age of paradoxes. There are so much seemingly absurd or self-contradictory things that we engage ourselves in or surround ourselves with. We tend to resist humbly and make big deals about sense of pride. We try to positivize the negative and negate the positive. We teach people to be proud of this and that almost to the detriment of cultural heritage and spiritual virtues. But we’re reminded this morning to beware of pride.

You may have heard the phrase “pride goeth before a fall!" It is a misquotation of the original scripture. It’s only similar in essence or by implication to the original Text. While we need to portray the Scripture to accurately reflect the original spirit of the text, what the scripture is saying to us, in fact, is that pride a person to destruction. The haughty spirit behind pride pushes the proud until he falls. This shows that destruction is the end result of pride.

Our call this morning is to deal with this vice, which is a corruption that almost originally got ingrafted in our nature. It exerts itself on us almost from childhood. We are to continually suppress all prideful tendencies and influences. They tyrannise grace and set us at odd against God. Because it leads us into walking and living under the control of self-confidence devoid of reference to God. It promotes ego, and fails to give God credit.

The mistakes of the proudful soul isn’t just spiritual, but their arrogance drives them to become so full of self so much that though they need help, they’re often so unwilling to receive help or delegate responsibility to anyone else until they end up crumbling beneath all the pressure; or make mistakes leading to their defeat. But to all those who will shun such temper, and sincerely or earnestly crave God’s help, God will lavish grace. Or have you not heard that God resists the proud — i.e. the unhumbled men, people who think highly of themselves, and put confidence in their own wisdom, power, or holiness, and who seek the praise of men rather than the praise of God — they shall be resisted or put down by God. O what fall could be greater!

Quote for the Day: “The problem of a proud soul is that he looks down on all things so much that he sees nothing above.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear LORD, thank you for helping me to know your mercies and grace. Please help me against all manners of yeast and puffs. Amen.
