Referential Fear, Not Slavish Fear

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, September 25, 2024

Today's Text: Deuteronomy 10:12, Psalm 23:4

Key Verse: Deuteronomy 10:12 (ASV): "And now, Israel, what doth Jehovah thy God require of thee, but to fear Jehovah thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve Jehovah thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul."

Though we are a people of faith, we are not immune to facing the common unprecedented challenges going on globally. Like it does for people of the world, fear creeps in for us so easily in almost all fronts. It threatens our trust in God, in government and in our goals. But God's Word offers guidance about how we should deal with fear, describing the idea of fear from two sides of the same coin. The first one being dread or anxious concern that cripples faith while the other side is an awe, wonder, and/or profound reverence of God that inspires trust in Him. All through the Bible, we are called to embrace the latter and never entertain the former. We are commanded to fear the Lord, which is not from a fear that cowers like a prisoner, but one with a sense of reverence born from a recognition of His majesty (Psalm 68:35), His holiness (Leviticus 11:44-45) and His power (Job 42:2).

In today's text, we are called to embrace a fear that fuels trust and confidence in God. It is clearly a paradoxical fear that promotes faith. The truth is, when we truly fear, i.e. reverence God, we have nothing to fear. As God's people, we trust in His control, and are unconcerned by Satan's schemes. We are unmoved by evil people and undisturbed during uncertain days. Therefore, as you meditate on this, do not let fear paralyze you. Anxiety and fear are like wild animals – the more you feed them, the stronger they grow. You must be aware that Satan delights in fearful Christians, but those who grow in faith banish fear rather than let fear banish their faith (Hebrews 11:6). Our faith, the Bible says, is your the very victory that overcomes the world (1 John 5:4).

Action Steps: Reflect on areas where fear is holding you back. Identify those sources and how they are impacting your faith. Intentionally replace fear with faith, cultivating reverence for God. Pray for courage and wisdom to take action despite fear.

Quote for the Day: "We are held in slavery to fear whenever we fail to let the faith in one who holds fear in slavery hold us up." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for word to me this day, calling me unto a fear that loves, serves and reverence You only and wages war on the enemy. Please help me overcome debilitating fear with reverence for You. Guide me in replacing fear with reverence and trust each passing moment of my life. And, may Your majesty, holiness, and power inspire a growing trust in Your Word — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
