Religious Common Sense

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, September 12, 2024

Today’s Text: Ezekiel 37:1-14

Key Verse: Ezekiel 37:3 (KJV): "And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest."

We have all.probably used the term common sense in a way. We mostly use it to describe the ability to think critically, make sound judgments, and navigate everyday situations effectively. It's often considered a shared understanding of what's reasonable, practical, and sensible. However, the concept of common sense can be subjective, as people from different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences may have varying perspectives on what's considered sensible. But, is common sense truly common? What's common sense in standing before a grave site and you were asked can the folks buried here live again? What if you were Prophet Ezekiel, what would you answer?

We all face questions of common sense everyday. It could be on the political situation of our nation or critical situation of life. What if God were to ask you about that crooked fiend, the wayward child, hardened rogue, crooked sinner, hopeless situation or difficult times and issues in your life? What would be your rationality? That like the situation before Ezekiel. Can these bones live? Can a twisted life be made right? Can God use Donald Trump or can he use Kamala Harris? Can Nigeria's nation be better? Can a crooked soul become God's saint? If God were to ask you any of these questions, please don't a swer him with religious common sense. Learn from Prophet Ezekiel, who shows us the best possible way to not give in to human rationality: O Lord God, You know!

Walking with God has never been compatible with human rationality. You look at Abraham and other men of faith. Look at the incredible possibilities the came out of such con men as the Galilean disciples of Christ. Perhaps, you'd never entertain religious common sense any more. Things like if I have tried a little more... etc. Yes, we all aleays think that it is much sensible to do, fix, handle and take charge of things than to trust in God. It easy for us to mistake fear for faith and sensual rationality for inspiration. That is why the more inteligent and rational the human race become, the fewer Prophet Ezekiel, Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist, Peter, James and John we we see. We all, probably, need to give up our religious rationality that's stopping us from personal experience of God's power.

Action Step: Seek God's guidance always. Let God speak to you and guide you at all times of uncertainty. Be honest before God, and trust in His ability to revive, restore, and make things new.

Quote for the Day: "God, in the most hopeless situations, brings new life and restoration to those whose trust and hope are in Him." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you in humility, acknowledging my spiritual dryness, scatteredness and confusion. I ask for your guidance and power to revive a right spirit within me. Just as you brought life to the valley of dry bones, I trust in your ability to bring new life to my situation, and those of my generation. Please help me Lord to trust in your power and to seek your guidance in times of uncertainty and not lean on my understanding and rationality. Revive me, restore me, and bring new life to my spirit — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
