Restrain from Weeping

Restrain from Weeping

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, August 8, 2024

Today’s Text:  Jeremiah 31:15-21

Key Verse: Jeremiah 31:16 (ESV): "Thus says the Lord: “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the Lord, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.”

This key verse is a prophecy from Jeremiah. God showed him the pain and grief that was going to befall women of Israel resulting from the devil's anger that Jesus was born. Rachel was used as a prophetic symbol of the nation's or nations' matriarch, mourning the loss of those innocent children that would suffer the massacre by the hand of King Herod: a spiritual antitype of several who would fall victim of Satan's destructive traps. However, there is the phrase "refrain your eyes from tears," which is not to minimize the extent or pain of this grievous loss but to point to the surpassing comfort and hope that is coming from the Lord, their Holy One and Redeemer.

Ramah was a significant location, about 5 miles north of Jerusalem, which was a gathering place for exiles and a symbol of God's judgment. Lamentation, bitter weeping and death comes upon us as God's judgment because souls that sin die. But, this is what the Lord says, in His mercy, refrain your voice from weeping because your work of faith, hope and love in the Lord has a salvivic reward. Though you have suffered loss of many sons yet there is the One Son, in whom and through whom many sons shall come to you from the land of the enemy, and come to glory.

God has a plan. He is offering hope and comfort through the appearance of Jesus Christ to restore and redeem them from the land of the enemy. This verse foretells the future restoration snd reconciliation of people, whom God will bring from every tribes and nations. That is why Matthew applies this prophecy to the birth of Christ in his chapter 2 verse 18, emphasizing the significance of the event, but paying better attention on the promised hope over the grievous loss. God is always aware and speaking to the sorrow and grief of His people. But more than that, He is offering hope and promise of restoration. Whatever the gravity of the events in your life is, God always has a plan and a way of escape. He is always thousand year steps ahead of the enemy.

Action Steps: You don't have to deny your emotions: but while acknowledging your pain and struggles, choose to trust God's sovereignty. Seek God's presence, comfort and guidance. Hold onto faith: Remember God's character and promises, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.

Quote for the Day: "Genuine faith can trust in God's sovereignty, even in the midst of pain and uncertainty." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me to trust in Your goodness, even in the midst of pain and uncertainty. Give me the courage to declare, "It is well," knowing that You are always with me; even when my world is shaken. Give me the courage to stand strong and steadfast knowing that you are always working for my good — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
