Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, May 23, 2020
Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 8:4-20
Key Verse: 1 Samuel 8:11 (ASV): “And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots.”
As we turn our spotlight away from Pharaoh’s spectacle of others; God sets king Saul, who despite being favored to be the first king of the United Kingdom of Israel, he led a life marked by opposition and despotism. He saw the Jews through the eyes of capitalism.
There are many believers today, who best fit the description that God gave of Saul in this text. They see others as instruments to be used and take delight in taking the best of them. They take advantage of other people. The words, “He will take your sons” represents a graphic picture of a despotic monarch that take the best of others.
If you see and use people as instruments to be used for personal pleasure and gain; you fit in the description that God gave of king Saul, and see through his eyes. That is not how Jesus our Lord sees people. Jesus saw the weak and the oppressed and helped them. He saw the hungry and fed them; the sick, and healed them. Even the rejected folks He saw as sons and daughters of Abraham who should be pitied, healed, helped and forgiven. How do you see others?!
Quote for the Day: "Just one cure is available for the labyrinth of racism, oppression and segregation — Jesus, the Christ!” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I repent of all personal weakness and wickedness. Please help me to love and serve others, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
