Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 9:7-10
Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:10 (ESV): "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going."
This verse is speaking to a weary, wishy-washy, half-baked and halfway generation such as this to put our best effort into whatever task or activity we undertake. Whatever we do: whether big or small, as a way of honoring God and living a life of purpose. The verse speaks to us today by reminding us to have a strong work ethic, to be diligent, and to strive for excellence in all we do. It encourages us to be faithful in the small things and to take pride in our work, as if doing it for God himself.
A Christian bricklayer who, when asked why he worked so hard and took such pride in his work, replied, "I'm not just building a wall, I'm building a monument to God's glory." Though the construction was a contract given by another man, he sees everything from a divine perspective. His example shows how we can apply today's verse in our daily lives, even in seemingly mundane tasks, and how our work can become an act of worship and a reflection of our faith.
This speaks to all of us: pastors, church workers, artisans, bankers, teachers, artists and leaders in several ways. It reminds us to put our best effort into our work, serving God and His people with all our strength. It encourages us to strive for excellence, and be faithful in the small things, even when no one is watching. We must work with integrity, as if everything is for God Himself. We must let this text inspire us to have a passion for our work, serving with energy and enthusiasm. This is a call to renew our stewardship: of time, talents, and resources. It's a reminder that we will give an account to God for our work and leadership.
Quote for the Day: "Give your all, God will fill your world: do your best, and God will do the rest." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please guide my hands and heart to serve with excellence, faithfulness, and passion. May my work be a reflection of Your glory and a blessing to others — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
