Set Your Face Like a Flint

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, June 6, 2021

Today’s Text: Isaiah 50:4-11

Key Verse: Isaiah 50:7 (ESV): “But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.“

Back in the days when the stern racial hostility in this nation was beginning to gain attention, a federal judge ordered a city to open its public school to African-American children. Ok he order made white parents to keep their children out, giving rise to homeschooling and private and independent schools districts. Those who would not pull out of public schools threatened black children who came to school. So black kids stayed home. But there was a black child whose parents would not let her stay home. Every morning she walked alone through a heckling crowd to an empty school. White people lined up on both sides of the way and shook their fists at her, threatening to do terrible things to her if she kept coming to their school. But every morning she came back walking among them with her head up, eyes straight.

How many of us, believers, have the got to walk through with our chests up and our heads sticked high in the midst of opposition? We are all faced with challenges than we have ability or opportunity to face. We are burdened with needs. We still grapple hard with the effects of coronavirus. More people are living under the pressure of emptiness feelings. Even, today, racial hostility is hitting deep to the very fabrics of our faith life. But today’s text is an admonition that we can still walk straight because God is with us. None of us should let the challenges of the time to bury our heads in the sand. We need to be like that black kid. As natural men, we lack the capacity to face our vacuum and needs. We lack what it has to stick up our heads. Our minds cannot endure the emptiness we create fir ourselves. But He who comes to the Father and set his face on Him are never put to shame.

Quote for the Day: “Looking up to God is a sure way to overcoming self-weariness or external defeats." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, give me grace to look up to you in easy moments or during hard times, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
