Today’s Text: 2 Kings 5:1-14
Key Verse: 2 Kings 5:13 (ESV): *But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?”"
In times of crisis, God often requires simple obedience from us. Naaman, was a powerful Syrian official, who had a grievous affliction in his life. He had leprosy: a demeaning skin disease, and a "but" in his story of accomplishments. When he ran to the God of Israel for help, God's instruction to him was to wash seven times in the Jordan River and his leprosy would be healed. O how we are blessed with several deep spiritual lessons from this biblical account. Being prominent, wealthy or powerful does not exclude anyone from challenges. debilitating skin disease. We all come to our moments of vulnerability and in need of help. However, Naaman's encounter with the prophet Elisha presents us with another important foreshadow of encountering Christ and the nature of faith and obedience.
Like Naaman, we often approach the word of God with initial reluctance because of our pride or expectations. If you aporoach the Savior with a proudful spirit, you're likely going to be, like Naaman, anticipating a difficult, more elaborate or personalized solution. Every natural man would struggled to comprehend the simplicity of Elisha's instructions, and/or salvation message of Christ. The reason is simple: God's ways are disconnected from human expectation. God works in the simplest ways and requires grandiose solution. Experiencing God requires setting aside our pride and obeying God's simple instructions.
Faith requires undertaking, not understanding. We must trust God's ways, even when they seem illogical or contrary to our expectations. God's ability to work through ordinary means is never in doubt. It's only a challenge to humans because of our tendency to seek complex solutions. But redemption is as simple as ABC. Besides, it is available through faith alone. When we learn to obey God's simple instructions, it yields profound effects. Obedience has always been key, even when we don't understand; but pride and self-reliance a hinderance to our help.
Action Steps: Reflect on areas where you're resisting God's simple instructions. Confess Jesus as Lord and believe in His resurrection. Obey God's Word, even when it seems difficult.
Quote for the Day: "God's instructions are easy to follow. They aren't a burden. Instead, they are manageable and freeing; reasonable and easy." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Your overwhelming Love expressed toward us in diverse ways. Please help me trust Your simple instructions and obey Your Word. Grant me faith to confess Jesus as Lord and believe in His saving grace. Cleanse me from sin and make me whole — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
