Today’s Text: Proverbs 14:31-35
Key Verse: Proverbs 14:34 (ESV): “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
After his retirement from the Nigerian Army, renowned 1Pastor Joseph Adebayo Adelakun’s burden against corruption in those days moved him to release his famous album, “Amona tete maa bo” in 1984. Today, 40years later, Nigeria and many nations of the world, including Israel and America grope and are troubled under even thicker yoke of corruption. Today’s text presents us with a rule of only two alternatives, and leaves no room for middle ground. Any nation which pursues righteousness will be exalted. And, any which pursues iniquities will be destroyed by effects of sin.
This call, unfortunately, does not exclude the Church because it seems to have drafted into the system of the world. This is a call on all people and nations. We must all weigh ourselves, especially in the face of current challenges and terror. It’s an exhortation to desist from actions and inactions that debase us and bring us into contempt and ruin by provoking ill-will of God against us. Unfortunately, rather than humble ourselves to pursue and embrace righteous, both the world and the Church despise the warning. Instead, we try hard to redefine righteousness and sin to set comfortable standards for ourselves. This is certainly a reproach and shame.
Our ungodliness marks us by widespread reproach of poverty, unrests and insecurity. We are arrogant and blinded from seeing our misery. Even the church that is supposed to be salt and light has not only deviated from its sacred callings; but has drifted so far from God that the way back seems like a distant unreality. Holy things of God have been subjected to comedy without remedy. However, if we can humble ourselves and pray, then no more shall the holy name of the Lord be defamed among us. This is a call for us to repent and return to God. Our nation can blossom again. We can experience sanity in leadership, physical well being, material prosperity, moral and spiritual advancement, increase in selflessness, and abiding favor of God. These are marks of an exalted nation.
Quote for the Day: “What virtue is to true strength is the same thing that righteousness is to the foundation for good life and favor from the Lord.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear LORD, we repent on behalf of ourselves, the Church and our nations. We humble ourselves before you, and seek your healing and restoration — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
