Snakes and Scorpions

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, November 5, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 10:17-29

Key Verse: Luke 10:19 (NIV): “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”

We are never in any funny drama. Our parts, acts and scenes of life are never easy. Our antagonists are not joking at all. The Bible likens them to snakes and scorpions: two dangerous and venomous creatures of pain and death—each representing untold danger in its right. But we have confidence in our protagonist, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who is not only the leading character in our life drama, but is also the director and anchor of our soul. He sent us out amidst those wolves to proclaim His kingdom and prepare His way. He knows we may not always be well received, but that often, we’d be vehemently repelled.

Not only are we repelled, but we are hated, stung and bitten everyday. Why? We have been sent to the core places of darkness: where destroyers, and their ruins and rubbles are. We walk in places where adders hide, snakes crawl and scorpions sting. But we have confidence that the One who sent us is the same who also promised us power and victory over all evil pressures, serpents and scorpions that seek to antagonize, oppress, repress and suppress us. They could not hurt Paul, at Melita. They cannot hurt us anywhere. We must never be afraid of any lurking evil. The Lord our great Jehovah will help us; therefore we shall not be confounded, afraid or ashamed. Therefore, be strong. You have been given authority to shake any deadly viper from off your hands; and in to the fire; to trample on them; and to take them up with your hands. So rejoice, tor you have divine immunity against all natural calamities and spiritual evil.

Quote for the Day: “Christians live daily among a generation described as brood of vipers so we may beware of the venomous serpentine manipulation around us.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, let me walk in daily awareness and reality of your power and victory in my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
