Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, March 24, 2024
Today’s Text: Mark 2:1-11
Key Verse: Mark 2:4 (ESV): "And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay."
Today, we are meditating on the story of a group of men (generally assumed to be friends) who were determined to bring a paralyzed man (also assumed to be their friend) to Jesus for healing. Their story speaks to several important things in our lives. It speaks of love for others, of selfless service, sacrifice, perseverance and creativity in our pursuit of Jesus. It also highlights the value of community and the power of friendship.
In today's world, we face many challenges and troubles. We see division, hatred, and a degeneration of fraternal love. Like the crowd and the enclave in this text created barriers to accessing Jesus, there are many modern crowds and roofs that prevent people from reaching those in need or hinder us from experiencing the fullness of life. Some crowds and roofs are in the form of social and economic inequality, systemic injustices, discrimination and prejudice, political polarization, environmental degradation, mental health stigmas, accessibility barriers and racism.
However, there was four real men, who passed by the crowd and removed the roof to create a way for the paralytic to reach Jesus. Their example speaks to us that too must work to remove these modern-day "roofs" and create pathways for all to access the love, care, healing, grace, and forgiveness available in Jesus. Let us be inspired to strive to break down the barriers that separate us from one another and from the love of God.
This text reminds us that we can make a difference when we come together in love and determination. We are inspired by the example of these four who chose to be a paralyzed man's friends. We are challenged to remove the "roofs" that separate us from Jesus and from each other. We are taught by example, how to find creative ways to bring healing and hope to a world in need. We are also reminded that the power of friendship and community is about what we can do together for the kingdom of God.
Quote for the Day: ""Here's what Christian friendship looks like: It is working together to remove any perceivable barrier to create pathways for all to access Christ's love, healing, grace, and forgiveness." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please guide us as we work to remove the barriers that separate us from one another and from your love. Help us to see the "roofs" in our lives and in our world, and give us the courage and creativity to break them down. May we be instruments of your love and grace, bringing healing and hope to those who need it most — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
