Today’s Text: Proverbs 3:1-12
Key Verse: Proverbs 3:7 (ESV): "Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.”
Welcome to part 3 meditation on Spiritual Street Wisdom Series. This is a close follow-up to our last part. Can anyone ever imagine any greater enemy to trusting God and the fear of the Lord in our hearts than self-conceit of our own wisdom?! What does it mean to be wise in one's own eyes? It is when a person thinks he has all the answers and believes his own judgment as infallible. If we look around, we'd see how our generation is so filled with self-conceit and ego.
Most people trust only in their own understanding. Most think that they are always right and always refuse to consider others' perspectives. Stubbornness and close-mindedness are almost the order of our days. We all seem to rely solely on our intellect and experience rather than God. That's why our communities, fellowship, and relationships are messed up.
The Bible warns against this attitude in the text before us. We can not trust in the Lord with all our hearts while we lean on our own understanding. If we truly submit to Him in all our ways, then we cannot⁰o⁹ 0be wise in our own eyes. It is essential we all recognize the limits of our knowledge and understanding, and humble ourselves before God and others. This ppredisposesus to a humble spirit that can seek wisdom and guidance. When we imbibe this prudence and sobriety. It leads to health in not just our soul and body but our society and world at large.
But if we are wise in our own eyes, and lean on our own wisdom rather than God's, we are setting ourselves up for confusion and uncertainty, pride and arrogance, a hardened heart and resistance to divine guidance. This leads to difficulty in decision-making, lack of spiritual growth and guidance, increased anxiety and worry, and limited perspective and understanding. Isolation and division rule our world today for the same reason.
Show me a man wise in his own eyes, and I will show you one with increased susceptibility to sin and error, distance from God and His plans; a man having difficulty in discerning truth from lies, and missed opportunities for divine guidance and intervention. O may we not be that man: wise in our own eyes! Instead, may we trust in the Lord, seek His wisdom, and humble ourselves before Him each day of our lives.
Quote for the Day: "There is the danger of being wise in one's own eyes, thinking we know better than God or others. It is like the way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you would help me to recognize and surrender my own self-wisdom and self-sufficiency. Forgive me for the times I've trusted in my own understanding and leaned on my own abilities. Give me a humble heart, willing to listen and learn from you and others. Teach me to seek wisdom and guidance from your Word and your Spirit rather than relying solely on my own insight. And help me to see myself and my circumstances through your eyes and to trust in your goodness and sovereignty — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
