Today’s Text: Nahum 1:2-9
Key Verse: Nahum 1:7 (ESV): "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him."
Nahum of Elkosh is an Old Testament prophet, who prophesied between 663 and 654 BC, during the reign of King Manasseh, announcing God's plan to judge Nineveh, and bring comfort to Judah. Nahum assured Judah of God's control, justice and goodness. His message is also relevant to us today, who, in times of turmoil and distress, often feel lost and alone. Our selected key verse, in particular, reminds us that we are not without refuge. Our God is a good God. He shelters us in the midst of storms. He provides a safe haven, a place of protection and peace for us.
But what makes this shelter so secure? It is not just the physical protection, but the knowledge that "He knows." God is intimately aware of our struggles, our fears, and our doubts. He sees our hearts and understands our pain. And in this knowledge, we find comfort and strength. As we meditate on this verse, let us remember that our God is a personal God, who cares deeply for His children. He is not a distant deity. No: not thee, thine or thou far removed from our reality. But he is a loving Father who desires to shelter us in His arms.
In the midst of trouble, let us run to this shelter, to the arms of our loving God. Let us always trust in His goodness and His knowledge, knowing that He will carry us through even the darkest of days. It is indeed refreshing and comforting to know that God knows us intimately and personally. This knowledge brings a sense of security, peace, and hope. It reminds us that we are not alone, that God is always with us, and that He understands our thoughts, feelings, and struggles. This understanding is a foundation of faith and trust in God, and it allows us to deepen our relationship with Him.
Quote for the Day: "God's knowing us is the anchor of our identity. It's an assurance that we are Christ's and we have a solid ground for our worth, and the safe harbor for our souls." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I am grateful that you are my shelter in the day of trouble. I thank you for knowing me intimately; and that you see our heart and understand my struggles. In times of turmoil and distress, I run to you, my rock and refuge. I trust in your goodness and your power to protect me from harm. Help me to remember that you are always with me, even in the darkest of times. May your presence be my comfort and my strength, my hope and my peace — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
