Stronghold in Trouble

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, August 19, 2024

Today’s Text:  Nahum 1:1-13

Key Verse: Nahum 1:7 (ESV): "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him."

Nahum prophesied during the 7th century BC, a time of great turmoil and upheaval when the Assyrian Empire, with its capital in Nineveh, was a dominant world power and was known for its cruelty, brutality, and idolatry. God ordered this text as an oracle of His judgment on Nineveh for its wickedness and oppression, and as a contrast to His goodness and protection for His people. The word of God is consistently clear in contrasting God's goodness and the evil of powerful people. We live in an evil and wicked world but God's care and protection for His people, even in the midst of judgment and chaos, remain steadfast. Through today's text, God offers hope and comfort to God's people who are facing persecution, judgment and turmoil.

The prophet reminds us that regardless of how wicked this world is, the Lord's good, benevolent and loving nature is never in doubt. Therefore, His people can always trust Him to be their stronghold in the day of trouble. The idea of stronghold as used by Nahum is that of a secure refuge, fortress, or place of safety in times of distress, danger, or chaos. God has intimate knowledge and understanding of those who take refuge in Him and secures them in times of crisis. Who are those who take refuge in him? They are people who trust in God, seek His protection, and rely on His saving grace. There is a personal relationship between God and those who trust in Him. He knows their thoughts, needs, and struggles, and it is His joy to be their secure refuge in times of trouble.

Friends, when facing life's trouble or uncertainty, let this medication be your comfort and assurance. God is good, even in the midst of trouble. He is a reliable and secure refuge who knows and cares for those who trust in Him. Let this bring you peace and strength in whatever you are passing through. Tell that devil that the Lord is your shelter, and your hiding place. You are known by Him, and in His presence alone can you find peace and protection as you continue to trust in His goodness and sovereignty. And, in the knowledge of His character, inherent goodness, love, and benevolence alone can you find comfort and strength.

Action Steps: Always remember that God is your shelter and refuge. Trust in His goodness and sovereignty, knowing that He is in control. Find comfort in knowing that God knows you intimately and cares for you deeply. Reflect on how God's knowledge of you brings strength and peace to your life.

Quote for the Day: "God does not just keep His people in times of trouble, but Ge is a constant and consistent stronghold of goodness." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for being my stronghold in times of trouble. Your goodness and love are a refuge for me. Help me to trust in Your sovereignty and mercy no matter what I face. Let me find comfort in knowing that You intimately know me and care for me. Be my secure refuge, my fortress, and my place of safety. And, let me, in Your goodness alone, anchor my peace and strength — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
