The Blessing of Doing the Word

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, January 15, 2023

Today’s Text: Luke 11:27, 28

Key Verse: Luke 11:28 (ESV): “But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!””

There is doubt in my mind that God seeks every possible way to bless his children. Look around you, and you will see in every stroke of time, ticking of the clock and beating of the heart that His blessings hover around us in all things. But one of the greatest ways by which God blesses humanity is by sending us His word — to reveal His purpose. and truth. The simplest or perhaps best way to convey truth is by speech. Jesus described the spoken message of the Kingdom as a great source of unparalleled unprejudiced blessing. The word He chose that is translated blessed is one that has nothing to do with outward appearances or circumstances to describe the blessing. We already know how our world perceives blessing and embraces it with loud parties — yet are never satisfied with/in it: but Jesus says, the one who hears and keeps the word of God is blessed indeed. Why? Because he finds quiet peace within and without (with God and man). He finds true happiness.

While Mary, the mother of the Lord was blessed to have begotten such a son, Jesus did not dispute that fact; but He prescribes yet a far greater blessedness, which results from hearing and keeping the word of God. This is a careful shift of the people’s attention to himself as the eternal "Logos" of God. Hearing and keeping the word of God comes from embracing him as our personal Lord and Savior. This happens when a person hears the gospel, allows faith to form in his heart, and acts in obedience to God’s word. There is no greater blessing or happiness in all of creation. It was important to include “he that hears” because faith comes by hearing. James admonishes us in this matter, saying: “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” (James 1:22) Yes, this divine benediction is upon anyone who hears, believes and put the word of Christ in practice. Would you ask yourself today: am I a hearer and a doer of the word of God? Am I a partaker in/of this unalloyed blessing?

Quote for the Day:Hearing God’s word is the planting or the seedbed of the Christian life, and doingis it’s fruit.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please give me courage, today and always, to be a doer of your word. In a world that is giving to saying one thing and doing another, may I move beyond lofty words to doing Your will. Give me boldness to act on your biddings in my lives, especially when no one is watching or applauding— in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
