The Counsel of Ahithophel

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, February 25, 2024

Today’s Text: Samuel 17:15 - 17:23

Key Verse: Samuel 17:14 (ESV): "And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom."

Ahitophel's story teaches us that God can turn wise counsel into foolishness to achieve His purposes; especially when men who are blessed with His wisdom turns against their source. This event highlights God's sovereignty and reminds us that our plans and wisdom are not supreme. Therefore, we must be humble and always allign with God. Yes, God can make a man wise to accomplish His will, often in unexpected ways. Additionally, Ahitophel's life serves as a reminder to humbly seek God's guidance and recognize that our understanding is limited. This realization will help us to trust in God's wisdom and surrender our plans to His divine purpose.

Until God turned against him, Ahitophel remained a man of wise counsel. He was God sent guide to King David. His advise in times of turmoil and strife were a beacon of life. His wisdom shone like a lamp in the night, illuminating paths, banishing fright. As long as God was with him, he helped David to navigate life's tangled maze. But when God forsook him, his counsel was turned into foolishness. Let us remember, dear friends, that wisdom's true source is where our hearts rend toward God. Therefore, we must always seek God's guidance and explore His words so that greater wisdom than Ahitophel's would be in store for us.

Quote for the Day: “The human hearts can be truly wise towards God: our minds can be fully discerning when we source and anchor our wisdom on continuing learning from Christ." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear God, we come before you with grateful hearts, acknowledging your sovereignty and wisdom. We recognize that our plans and understanding are limited, and we seek your guidance and direction. We trust that you can use even the most foolish of us as much as the wisest to accomplish your purposes. Help us to humbly seek your guidance and trust in your wisdom. May our hearts be aligned with yours, and may your will be done in our lives — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
