The Deceitfulness of Sin

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Friday, March 15, 2019

Today’s Text: Hebrews 3:12-19

Key Verse: Hebrews 3:13 (ESV): “But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Core parts of our life base their needed strength on how we employ or deploy our thoughts, words, and deeds. The enemy knows this, and plays a fast one on us. We are implored to help exhort those of the household of faith who need to realize how swift and quick the enemy’s pranks may be; and how earnestly we must fight against it.

We need not look too far to see what sin has done to our generation, how it causes people to harden their hearts and draw away from God in unbelief. When a person opens his realms of thoughts, words, and deeds to any sin, he becomes a captive in that realm. And he is therefore hardened and unable to think as clearly and joyfully and trustingly as before.

That’s why the wise man warns his son in Proverbs 1:10: “My son, if sinners entice you, do not yield to them.” Because once we are lured into an error, the liability is unlimited. When we are deceived, we accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. That’s what sin’s deceitfulness do to us. It is so strong that we feel satisfied in things that are not real, in created things rather than in the creator. Whether it is sensual pleasure, or putting others down, or holding unto wrong doctrines, or lifting self up, or insatiable desire for power or materials, we are held sway as slaves of those passion. That is why we need to daily exhort one another, lest sin have its deceiving and hardening effect on any of us.

As long as we wake and are blessed another day, we must continue to exhort ourselves to watch against the pitfalls of sin. This reminds us both the constancy and the urgency of the situation. We must never put off t consciousness of the deceitfulness of sin. All we have at hand is today, and it is already almost over, and our Lord’s return is much closer than when we first believed.

Quote for the Day: “We make emergency calls on menial matters; but our real emergencies are our moral disposition. Everything rises and falls on it.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear LORD, thank you because in Jesus, you’ve already given us a new heart and have placed your Spirit inside us, to help us guard ourselves against sin’s deceitfulness. Please help me Lord to live daily careful life to the glory of Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
