Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 6:11-16
Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV): “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
As Apostle Paul winds down the numerous exhortations in his first epistle to Timothy, it should interest us that his closing remarks were instructions: to flee from sin, pursue righteousness, fight the good fight of faith and take hold of the eternal life. It is important we ask ourselves: what does God want to have us learn from those closing notes?
This charge to fight the good fight of faith comes from one who himself said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
In those words, the apostle wants us to understand just what it means to fight the good fight of faith: what it involves—running from sin and pursing righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Why the word fight then? It is necessary to understand the believers’ living reality in the world as a struggle against ungodly systems that seeks to hunt down the faith. From the spiritual, the battle has now been taken to all platforms including the social media.
But regardless, we’ve got to contend real good for our faith. It involves making right choices – to pursue God’s will and live a life of faith each day. It is about fighting temptations, laying aside things that pull us away from God, and cultivating things that draw us closer to Him. That is the way of the good fight. It is finishing the race still keeping the faith even though the road is rough and narrow.
Quote for the Day: “The idea of the Christian good fight more perfectly fits into the metaphor of an Olympic contest for a prize.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me the courage and strength to fight the good fight of the faith. Help me to put on Your full armor, and to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. May I, in your strength, make war on the world, the flesh, and the devil. But teach me, Lord to expect and overcome resistance — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
