Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, May 14, 2024
Today’s Texts: 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Timothy 4:7-8, Hebrews 12:1-3
Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV): "Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses."
The Christian life is not a tranquil stroll through a peaceful meadow; it's a fierce battle against the forces of darkness. But we don't fight alone. We have the armor of God, the sword of the Spirit, and the shield of faith to protect us. Just as a skilled boxer gets back up after being knocked down, so too must we rise above the fray when life knocks us down. We don't stay on the ground, nursing our wounds; we get back up, dust ourselves off, and keep fighting.
The boxer trains and fights with focus and determination. In the dame way, the Christian must not be a passive existence, but an active engagement with the world and its challenges. We are called to persevere, to endure, and to overcome. We are likened to something greater than boxers, we are soldiers of the faith, called to endure hardship and fight the good fight of faith. We are not civilians, living a life of ease and comfort; but warriors, trained for battle and equipped with the armor of God.
As soldiers leave behind the comforts of their home and family to fight on the front lines, so too must we leave behind the comforts of our old life and take up the cross of Christ. We must be willing to face hardship, persecution, and even death itself, knowing that our ultimate victory is assured. And, we are not alone in this fight. Our Commander-in-Chief, Jesus Christ, has already won the war. We have our fellow soldiers, the body of Christ, who stand alongside us in the trenches. And we have our weapons, the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith, to defend ourselves against the enemy.
As you reflect on your personal spiritual journey, why not ask yourself? Am I fighting the good fight of faith? Am I standing firm in my convictions, or am I wavering in the face of adversity? Am I taking hold of eternal life, or am I settling for a mediocre existence? The greatest glory in living lies not in never having battles, but in rising tall to fight. And that's exactly what we do when we fight the good fight of faith. We rise above the doubts, the fears, and the uncertainties. We rise above the pain, the hurt, and the betrayal. And we keep moving forward, propelled by our faith in Christ Jesus.
Quote for the Day: "Faith is not a fragile flame that flickers in the wind, but a blazing fire that fuels our resilience, illuminates our path, and empowers us to fight the good fight, even when the darkness rages on." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me to fight the good fight of faith with courage and determination. Give me the grace to persevere, to endure, and to overcome. May my life be a testament to your power and love, and may I always rise up, even when I fall — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
