The Lord shall Keep You

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, October 4, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalm 121:1-8

Key Verse: Psalm 121:8 (NKJV): “The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.”

As a boy, fear was a huge oppression I faced. It was a grievous part of my daily life; but it was mostly fear of the unknown; fear of what I can see, and what I can’t. I was terrified of darkness, and trees and shadows, and birds — everything. I always thought something would come after me so that I always read Psalm 23; “the Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want…” No doubt, our need for keeping is real, genuine and urgent. On one hand, we live in a wicked world of darkness and wickedness; on the other, we have personal weaknesses that always make us wonder how we’d make it home.

However, we can take heart and be strong because of this amazing scriptural promise: “the Lord shall keep you.” Our Lord, Jesus Christ also prayed for us. In John 17:11, He prays, “I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name.” Therefore, though our world is filled with events, situations and forces that can cause great anxiety and fear, we are promised in God’s Word that our faithful God will keep us. As Christians, we have an imperishable, undefiled, and unfading promise of divine protection. God keeps us. He is keeping us. The Lord will keep you in your going out and coming in is a common Hebrew expression to denote the whole of life. This is God’s all-time promise for us.

Quote for the Day: “Anyone who does not regularly feel his need for safety has lost his/her hold on reality; and anyone who does not see his need for God is already trapped by evil.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I come to You today, asking for protection from the evil one. Lord, we are assailed moment by moment with realities that leave us vulnerable to fear and harm. Surround us with Your divine hedge of protection. Encompass us round about with Your strength and Your might. Let all who take refuge in You be glad, let them ever sing for joy — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
