The “One Thing” Path (Part 2)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, November 21, 2023

Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 7:17-24

Key Verse: Psalm 27:4 (NKJV): “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the  beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.”

How shall we understand this heartfelt aspiration of David if we think that by “dwelling in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,” he was referring to physical residence in a material Temple. No, he was more man of industry than any extraordinary man of our age. And therefore, for him, to be hid  “in the secret of His tabernacle” is deeper than physical. We already know that no one went into the secret place of the Most High, in the visible, material structure, except the high priest once a year. Whereas, the psalmist deep desire is to make it his abode always as a refuge in time of trouble.

The Psalmist’s “one-thing” was this desire; and it formed the entire spirit and attitude that connected him to the covenant he enjoyed with God. Deep within him was an unusual craving a deeper than normal romance with divine presence that surpasses location or situation. It is not about where we are, but on what we understand of God — especially that every place is God’s house, and presence.

Such yearning keeps our attitude to him unalloyed, not adjusted, whether we are in luxury or penury, in prosperity or adversity, in Africa or America; our “one-thing” remains the “one-thing”— the desires: to keep up unbroken consciousness of being in tune and touch with God. How wonderful would it be if we  can shape a lifestyle that desire God and communion with Him above our daily pursuit as our real undercurrent consciousness running all through our entire being perpetually. That was David’s “one-thing.”

Quote for the Day: “A man of “one thing” keeps one desire and seeks after it in persistent continuousness.“

Prayer: Dear God, thank You that I am called by Your name and I can delight myself in You. Please fill me with the deepest desires for You. Teach me to delight in You always. Let Your name be my one and only desire — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
