Re Today’s Text: Luke 10:38-42
Key Verse: Luke 10:42 (ESV): “But one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Before us today is one of the most famous narratives of the Bible; and the story is often used to talk about priorities; usually saying something to the effect that we should not be distracted with tasks while we are supposed to be with Jesus. It presents us with a great example of how easy it is for us to allow respect for culture and moral reasonings to rob us of being sensitive to God. It shows how our mindset jolts us into being passive about God’s will for our lives.
Whereas Martha was cambered and distracted over many things—worried about being nice and good before her guests. Just like us, anxious about many things, and troubled and tossed around unnecessarily. If that is you, right there: just hear Jesus saying to you right now, “one thing” is necessary! He prefers it when we are like Mary, who learnt the joy of sitting at Jesus’ feet to receive instructions. That, according to Jesus, is the “one thing:” It is the good portion which will not be taken away from her.
Friends, making wise and godly choices still remain the good portion that the Lord expects from us today. Instead of fretting and being anxious, being troubled about many things, why not learn the path to just one thing: quietly sitting at the Master’s feet just to look upon Him and listen to him. This is the one thing that’s necessary for you and me in a world filled with things that make us anxious or troubled.Jesus words say, “Do not worry about anything.
Mary of Bethany chose the good portion. We too can choose to keep our priorities straight as we follow Jesus. We can give Him our full and undivided attention and affection — sitting at His feet, listening to His words, and daily beholding a full, unbroken view of His face. This is the “one thing” that should not be taken from us — our spiritual development. Mary chose wisely, and the Master wants the same for Martha and us.
Quote for the Day: “An express command is to quit worrying about anything. The one thing that can help us not worry is to understand how much our Father in heaven loves us and is committed to providing for us.“
Prayer: Dear God, I just pray that You will help us experience your peace as we look to and listen to you. Help us to overcome the many things going on in our lives, families and the world around us that are robbing us of doing the one thing that is necessary. May we, like Mary, fix our eyes on you, hear your word to us, your love for us, trust your love for us and your sovereignty over us — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
