The One True Light

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, October 19, 2024

Today’s Text: John 1:1-12

Key Verse: John 1:9 (ESV): "The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world."

Light in Scriptures symbolizes life, happiness, prosperity, and, in a wider sense, of perfect being. It refers to yruth and righteous living; while darkness refers to falsehood and evil. To live as children of light means to be directed by what is good and right and true. Whereas, darkness symbolizes chaos, death, and the underworld. All underhanded devices are things belonging to darkness. That is why, after the Fall, the natural system of this world is darkness. However, this text tells us that in the midst of darkness and uncertainty, we find hope in the arrival of the true light, Jesus Christ, who illuminates our path to salvation and eternal life.

Notice what the text did not say: it did not say that Jesus is a light. It affirms that He is the true light. He transcends religious, cultural and temporal boundaries. He gives light and life to everyone and dispels darkness. He not only exposes sin and its consequences, He reveals God's character, love, mercy and justice, and gives us power to live right with God. John announces the arrival of Jesus Christ as the true light who steps out of His divine glory, came in human form to identify with our struggles, destroy the works of darkness, and transforms our darkness into light.

People who don't know Jesus are living in darkness, or belong to the darkness. While this does not always mean they are in pain and misery, it always degrades their spiritual health, insight and character. It results in lostness, untowardness, sinful and wicked activities, including hate to the light or people of light. It also lead to severe consequences such as delusion, hopelessness as described in Isaiah 9.

Without Jesus, we are all lost and subject to darkness. Sin and uncertainty reign in our lives. When we receive the light by inviting Jesus into our lives, we receive His illumination and liberation. We receive the power to be called and become children of God. Our lives, which was once marked by darkness, hate, oppression, manipulation and all manners of wicked things can then reflect the light of Jesus Christ, share His radiance with others, and become His agent of dispelling darkness in the world, shining hope in a generation marked by, or filled with, darkness.

Action Steps: Set aside time for worship and rest. Reflect on God's wonderful works and provision. Trust in God's sovereignty and justice. Pursue righteous living. Seek spiritual growth and true prosperity through prayer and scripture.

Quote for the Day: "Jesus is the light. He illuminates our understanding. Dispels our darkness and sin. Transforms our lives, and guides us to eternal life." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Lord, You are the light that never grows dim. Please let my light so shine for others to see and glorify You in and through me. Help me to be a beacon in the dark and shine brightly to those who have lost the way — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
