Today’s Text: Isaiah 9:1-7
Key Verse: Isaiah 9:6 (ASV): "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
To the Jews, the idea of the Prince of Peace is a term that simply and only refers to the Messiah, who would bring peace and redemption. It is His divinely attributed title that reveals the Messiah's peaceful nature and His mission to restore harmony between msn and God and among men. It also reveals an eschatological hope in which He represents the ultimate realization of God's kingdom.
In this text, Isaiah foresaw a clear picture of Christ's supernatural birth and described His mission. His total blend of humanity and divinity were clearly set forth in "a child is born, ...a son is given... and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace."
Sar or shar shalom means prince, ruler or leader of peace and complete wholeness. It means that He is the one who would remove all peace-disturbing factors and secures, first, a spiritual and physical wholeness for mankind.
This is a divine title that sets Jesus Christ apart from human rulers and prophets whose reigns seek peace on bloody conquest or sacrifice: a sharp contrast to such biblical kings as Nebuchadnezzar, and even David, whose rule was established on power but lack peace. Indeed, the title “Peaceful Prince" is the reason Jesus disappointed the Jews, who do not want a peaceful prince. They wanted a revolutionary monarch who would annihilate their foes and oppressors, and reestablish the glory that Israel knew in the days of Solomon.
But all.thamks to Jesus. He didn’t need to lift a finger to conquer not just Rome, but the whole world, and to bring glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” God was in Him, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing our trespasses to us. By His work on the cross, He satisfied every necessity for a ceasefire between us and God, and making a place for us who were enemies of God to become children of God. Anyone who trusts Christ as Lord and Savior finds peace in life’s trials, in life’s difficult process, and peace in life’s battles, relationships, and endeavors.
