Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, June 28, 2024
Today’s Text: Luke 12:13-21
Key Verse: Luke 12:15 (ESV): "And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.""
How often have you been consumed by your own passion, wealth and material possessions? Is your attitude to loving and following God ever adjusted by possession or non possession of money and things? You know how you desperately seek God in times of need, and how you easily discard with Him when the needs are gone. You might be careful so that you are not likable to this man in the parable of Jesus, whose focus is on storing up more and more for himself, without considering his relationship with God, or his true need, or the needs of/for others.
The man was called a "fool" because he has neglected his spiritual poverty and failed to seek the wiser path of being rich toward God. True wealth is never measured by material possessions but by our relationship with God. We are therefore warned against the dangers of self-sufficiency and the assumption that we can control our own lives. Our Lord is warning us against any sense of materialism that exposes us to the dangers of neglecting our spiritual needs or lives. Yes! Self-sufficiency and the assumption of control over our lives can lead to spiritual poverty.
Please take a moment today: reflect on your own priorities and values. The problem of the rich fool is not about hus vision for a new barn; but first, he was list in self-sufficiency. He thought he had everything he needed and was in control of his life. Second was materialism. He believed his wealth and possessions were the source of his security and happiness. Then he slided into lack of gratitude. He didn't acknowledge or thank God for his blessings. If these things are present in your life, they make you shortsighted. See how the man failed to consider his own mortality and the brevity of life, and ignored his relationship with God and the needs of others.
God wants you to do something about that misguided values and priorities so that they don't ultimately lead to your downfall. Are you investing in your relationship with God? Are you using your resources to demonstrate your trust in God's provision? Do you always remind yourself that true security and wealth come from God, not from material possessions? Today’s key point of reflection and reminder is that our identity, worth, and purpose are not defined by our possessions or wealth. Rather, they are found in our relationship with God and in living a life that honors and serves Him.
Quote for the Day: "Wealth is not a possession, but a responsibility. The greatest content of a great wealth is being content with little." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me to see that true wealth and true life are found in you, not in the things I own or accumulate. Forgive me for the times I have prioritized material possessions over my relationship with you and with others. Give me a heart of gratitude, generosity, and contentment; and may I never forget that you are the owner of all I have, and that you have entrusted me with your resources to use for your glory and the good of others — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
