The Shadow and the Shelter

Today’s Text: Psalm 91:16

Key Verse: Psalm 91:1 (NKJV): “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

What does dwelling in the shadow of the Almighty means? How do you abide in the shelter of the Most High? Whereas this scripture has been widely used by Christians and homes, most people are still at a loss when it comes to what it truly means. It means trusting implicitly in the love of God, His power and ability to give you everything you need to do His will, walk in safety, and glorify His name on earth.

The allegory of His shadow points us to the idea of the shade and hiding that we derive from dwelling in the secret place of the most high. It prefigures the believers’ safety and constant awareness of God's presence in their lives. Thus, the Psalmist pictures just what it means to put our complete trust in God as the only One who is able to protect, help, guide and shelter us on a daily basis as you face life's challenges.

Let us maintain confidence in God and His Word. That is the surest way to God's peace and joy. Psalm 91 is a Psalm to check out whenever our sense of security and confidence in Christ is tried. So that we too can attain the happiness of: “I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” And there is a glorious assurance that “He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.”

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for being my Shelter in times of trouble. I run to you today to find safety in your loving presence. O please, hide me under the shadows of Your wings — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
