Today’s Text: Psalm 124:1-8
Key Verse: Psalm 124:7 (ESV): We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped!"
Today's scripture pictures one of three biblical images by which the marvellous deliverance of God's people is illustrated. It has been compared to that of a people snatched, by a miracle, from the fury of surrounding and overwhelming torrents. It is likened to a lamb rescued from the jaws of a wolf or lion. Now the psalmist illustrates it by the escape of a bird, through the breaking of the snare, before the fowler could seize and kill it. God's power and love free His people from life's snares. There is aleays divine deliverance for God's as a package of pur covenant. Yes, He breaks snares, and sets us free from sin, fear and doubt.
Written around 1000-500 BCE, during a period when Israel's history was marked by wars with neighboring nations; threats from enemies; and God's mighty deliverance and protection of His people, Psalm 124, possibly pictures the scenarios of Israel's victory over the Philistines; or David's deliverance from Absalom's rebellion; or the celebration of Israel's independence. The aum of David us to spur us to trust in God's sovereignty and deliverance. He wants us to acknowledge divine intervention in history, and trust that He could do the same again and again. And, lastly, this Psalm serves as a call to thanksgiving and praise to the Lord God, our deliverer.
Through this text, God wants us to rust in His sovereignty and desire to deliver. Yes, the enemies lay snares for us to bring us. into sin m, darkness, bondage, pain and death, and to hold us trapped, and sometimes seem to prevail; but the psalmist wants us to stir up our trust in the Lord, our chain breaker. He shares the testimony of Isreal's deliverance to remind us that, in Christ, we shall not be put to shame confusion. We too will return with joy and ascribe all of our salvation, to the power, mercy, and deliverance of God. You shall look back with wonder and thanksgiving on the way in which the Lord has led you. This is not just true in the past. It is true now, and it is even truer in the future. Because God shall ultimately break every snare of the flesh and welcome us, at the end, to His hope and glory of eternal freedom.
Action Steps: Reflect on areas in your life in which you need deliverance. Trust God's power to heal andcto deliver. Always proclain and share your testimony of God's deliverance.
Quote for the Day: "Our deliverance is something more than a gift. It is a testimony to God's faithfulness and sovereignty on behalf of His people. He causes us to escape snares of the fowlers. He breaks the snares and causes us to escaped." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for breaking the snares that bind me. I thank You for delivering us from the traps of life. Please help us to walk in the freedom wherewith Your have made us free; and entangle ourselves no longer in the snare of the fowler. And, may our hearts remain grateful and faithful. And may we continue to walk free from fear, doubt and sin. Fill us with Your love and peace — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
